A buttery roll. I listed them as FrenchGerman. My heritage is German from Russia. I don't know if they are German or Russian, or even Dutch. They are nothing like the zweiback you buy in stores.

Recipe Ingredients for Zweiback

1 1/3 c skim milk
1/2 c butter
1 1/3 tsp salt
1 1/3 tsp sugar
4 c flour
2 tsp yeast

Recipe Directions for Zweiback

  1. Add ingredients to bread machine in the order listed. Start machine in dough mode. Allow to knead once. Remove dough from machine, cover & set in a warm place to rise. Optional: Add another batch of ingredients to the machine & allow to continue the cycle.

  2. When the machine starts to knead the second time, the first batch of dough should be double in size. Pinch off 48 walnut sized balls of dough. Let rise until double. Push your thumb into half of the dough balls. Place the rest of the dough balls on top of the smashed ones. Bake at

  3. 400 until brown, 20-25 minutes. Let the second batch rise in the machine before pinching off dough.
