When You Feel Good, You Look Good

Apyle15 achieved her weight loss through exercise, healthy eating and changing her attitude. Her story shows the benefits of exercising while losing weight. As she points out, "I had never realized how bad my eating habits truly were!”  She lost 45lbs and she also acquired a whole new sense of self confidence.

She contacted us through our Share Your Story feature, and provided the following answers to our questionnaire.

1. What made you decide to lose weight this time?

I have always been very athletic and involved in numerous sports, which did a great job of keeping me relatively in shape. In fact, I made my college decision to go to Austin Peay State University on a tennis and academic scholarship. Although sports had kept my weight decent (around 145 lbs), I had horrible eating habits. The summer before and during my sophomore year of college I had become a little burnt out on tennis and quit trying as hard in practice and also quit doing any extra activity on my own. Over the course of these months I ballooned to 170 pounds. When I stepped on the scale and saw that number, I nearly had a heart attack. I decided right then that since I had already decided to quit tennis at the end of the season (April 2009), I was going to begin an immediate overhaul of my eating habits and begin an extensive workout regimen.

2. What other "diets" (programs, products, plans, or services) had you tried in the past?

Being as young as I am, I've never tried any other "diets" in the past.

3. What changes did you make to your usual diet, activity, lifestyle, and attitude?

I made drastic changes in my diet, activity, and entire lifestyle that allowed me to achieve my weight loss goals. First, I began to count every calorie that entered my mouth, even gum! Until then, I had never realized how bad my eating habits truly were. I began substituting fruits and vegetables for sweets and fattening side items. The most important change I made was my attitude. I've always heard the saying, "If you feel good, you look good!" and now I really believe this! I told myself just to keep focused and remember that with hard work I can achieve my weight loss goal. I made a list of the goals I had and some simple inspirational tips to keep me going and hung it on my bedroom wall where I would see it everyday. I had great friends, family, and a wonderful fiancé who supported me better than I could have ever imagined.

4. How did Calorie Count help you to lose weight?

Calorie Count helped me so much once I found out about it. I would always google foods before I ate them to find out the nutrition facts and wound up using calorie count the majority of the time. Once I explored it and got signed up I was so thrilled not to always have to be jotting down the nutrition facts for what I ate on a piece of paper I kept in my purse. Seeing the grades for different foods really helped me to make smarter choices, too. There were a lot of things I thought I was being healthy about, but after seeing the grade and understanding what the numbers mean, I now know I wasn't being so smart.

5. What was most challenging about losing weight?

In my opinion, the most challenging aspect of losing weight is to not get discouraged after the initial weight drop. I lost a considerable amount of weight in the first month or so then didn't lose much for another month even though I was working extremely hard. This was a trying time, but by remembering my end goal and staying focused on that, I found a way to keep going.

6. How long did it take you to see results?

I saw early results within the first month. But as for major results, within the first six months I had dropped 25 pounds.

7. When did you realize that you were a success?

I first realized I was a success when it occurred to me that my whole lifestyle has changed. Before, I had horrible eating habits and I was active but I didn't enjoy it and didn't understand the true benefits that it had. Now I love eating healthy and the way it makes you feel. Also, I love going for long runs and pushing myself to be better and work as hard as I can.

8. How do you prevent relapse?

I still have the list of goals and tips hanging in my room. I look at it whenever I don't feel like running or eating healthy and it reminds me how hard I worked to get where I am now and that I never want to go back to where I was (overweight and under confident!).

9. How has your life changed now that you've lost weight?

Losing weight has helped my confidence more than anything - I feel so much better about myself! When I run into old friends that I haven't seen in years, many of them don't recognize me. This always boosts my confidence! Also, my attitudes about eating and exercising have changed dramatically. I now find myself making healthy choices without even thinking about it.

10. What five tips do you have for other dieters?

  • Stay focused. Keep your eyes on the end goal and make that your main focus. Don't worry if you don't lose any weight one week, if you keep working hard it WILL work!
  • Surround yourself with supportive folks. As I mentioned, I had a wonderful support team that helped me so much. When you are trying to lose weight, the last thing you want is someone wanting to eat doughnuts late at night. 
  • Change your lifestyle & attitude. Many people diet, lose weight,
    then gain it all back because they only changed their eating habits
    for a given amount of time. Educate yourself with the advantages of
    eating healthy and being active and you will want to change your
  • Reward yourself. Set milestones and reward yourself when you reach
    them. I'm not necessarily referring to food rewards (if that's what
    works for you, just remember small servings of a "bad" reward food are
    ok), but for me it is clothes. There was nothing that felt better than
    buying a size 2 pair of jeans.
  • Help others. I find that helping others with weight loss helps me. If you are advising others on making healthy eating choices, you will
    make healthier eating choices. Also, encouraging someone else to
    exercise makes you more likely to do your workout regimen.

Congratulations, but surely a size 2 is too small? What is your BMI? You look slimmer than me in the photo and I have been advised by my Dr that I am too thin (size 6, height 5'6). I still think you are an inspiration though, and you look great. Well done.

Size 2 isn't too small on some people even at 5'8".

I hear you on the size 2 jeans!  That was the ultimate reward for me, it feels so good to go into stores and know that almost everything is going to look good on you!  Congrats, and keep it up!

Hey Apyle15. Actually I am a size 4 - got the conversion wrong! Pretty pleased with that - dropped 2 sizes in the past year, so I share your happiness, but have been warned not to drop any more. Good luck with the maintenance!

Thanks!  I was having a bad day and reading this has given me inspiration.  I started CC about 5 weeks ago and lost a lot of weight the first month and now the scale just wont go down.  Thanks for letting me know this has happened to you too, and reminding me to keep on pushing.

richiegirl: My BMI is 20.4, which is in the normal range. I'm built very straight (no hips) which could be the reason for the size differences.

Lisa Cochran: I eat LOTS of fruit! But, usually cereal for breakfast, a "Naturally More" (I get it at Wal-Mart) peanut butter sandwich at lunch and some type of pasta for dinner. I like the Ronzoni SmartTaste pastas with sauce (Light Ragu Alfredo or Classico red sauces). All of these meals are with fruit. I also get the Great Value no sugar added, fat free ice cream at Wal-Mart that I have for dessert with dinner (the strawberry kind is great!) Hope this helps!

I can understand why someone would be excited about wearing a small size.  I would probably the same way BUT I'm probab᥿ 9;ly older than most old& #65279;er than most of you and& #65279; there has always been a fixation on size by so many women.  It has absolutely NOTHING to do with your weight/size/health.  I'm 5'8 and at my thinnest, weighed 119 lbs in college - i looked like a skelton and yet wore size 9 jeans, maybe a 7 for awhile.  I'm pretty sure my skelton is bigger than a 2 yet like the other pe&# 65279;rson said, you can be 5'8 and a size 2 and not be over ly thin.  Congratulations on your success - that is a real accomplishment!

A comment on clothes sizes - they are incredibly random. When I was a junior in college I was at my lowest adult weight 165 pounds at 5'7" (and the weight my doctor has said will be good for me now - even though it is higher than what the BMI charts have to say) and still wore a size 14-16 blouse and a size 12 skirt. Go figure!

Anstout: I have my limit set at 1800, but it really just depends on how much I run. I run between 3-5 miles a day, so if I run 5 miles, I get to eat a little more. I mostly just pay attention to the deficit on here :)

I just started calorie counting and exercising a month ago and am down about 10 lbs now. My starting weight was like yours... how many calories were you eating and how often/long were you working out.... I would love to match your success when I am done. You look great.
