I work the night shift. When should I eat and exercise?
Asked by leesoolim on Aug 02, 2008 in Weight Loss

I work from 10 PM to 7AM and I don't know how often I should eat and what time to exercise. I working out in the morning after work at 7AM and at work at 2 AM. I am eating only once or twice a day. I know that the night shift slows metabolism and lack of sleep is also not good, but I love my job as a nurse and don't want to leave the shift.

When you work from 10 PM to 7 AM, it is best to eat on a normal schedule centered on your work and bedtime. You might want to sleep from 10 AM to 6 PM, and have a snack when you awaken, and then exercise and have a big meal at 8 PM before you leave for work. Your “lunch” could be between 1 and 2 AM, with another light meal at 8 AM, and very small snacks in-between if you are hungry. It’s best to exercise before you go to work, rather than after, because exercise can increase alertness and disturb your sleep. Also avoid caffeine for at least five hours before bed. Your metabolism shouldn't slow down if you can maintain this schedule.
