Whole wheat brownies made with melted milk chocolate chips.

Recipe Ingredients for Whole Wheat Milk Chocolate Brownies

4 oz unsalted butter
4 oz milk chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 large eggs
4 1/2 oz whole wheat flour
2 tbsp cocoa

Recipe Directions for Whole Wheat Milk Chocolate Brownies

  1. Position oven rack on middle rung. Preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.

  2. Spray 8-inch square baking pan with non-stick cooking spray and put aside.

  3. Place butter and chocolate in medium sized metal mixing bowl. Fill medium size sauce pan with water half-way and bring to boil. When water is boiling, place metal mixing bowl with chocolate and butter over the pan. Mix with wooden spoon until melted and blended together. (caution, pan will be hot!)

  4. Using a whisk, stir in sugar, salt, and vanilla until mixed. (TIP: For lower sugar brownies, try substituting the sugar with Truvia. Also, don't bother using Splenda, it gives the brownies a strange taste.)

  5. Add eggs one at a time, whisking each until blended. Add the flour and cocoa; beat until well blended(the batter should be smooth, about 30-60 seconds). Scrape the batter into the prepared pan.

  6. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes. Check brownies towards end of baking time with a toothpick; a toothpick inserted in the middle should come out almost clean with a few moist crumbs clinging to it.

  7. Place the pan on a rack until cool enough to handle. Run a spatula around the edges to loosen brownies from pan, then flip over onto a prepared flat work surface. Cut into 2 inch squares and serve warm; makes 16 servings.
