A hearty, meaty, cheesy lasagne made with whole wheat noodles. I couldn't find Italpasta noodles in here, so I had to fake it, but close enough I hope!

Recipe Ingredients for Whole Wheat Hearty Lasagne

1 cup mushrooms, diced
1/2 cup onions, diced
2 lbs hamburger, fried
175 grams Italpasta whole wheat lasgane noodles
500 ml 1% cottage cheese
500 grams part-skim mozzarella cheese, shredded
750 grams spaghetti sauce
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup celery, diced
1/4 cup parmesan cheese, freshly grated

Recipe Directions for Whole Wheat Hearty Lasagne

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Put aside about 3/4 cup of your moza cheese for the final touches. You'll need 9 dry pasta noodles (thats the 175grams listed in the recipe), and a large peice of tinfoil, preferrably the strong stuff.

  2. Start by frying up your hamburger until its well browned. Drain excess fat. Add your chopped onion, chopped mushrooms, and diced celery to the meat and cook for another 5 minutes. Make sure your veggies are finely diced.

  3. Add your spaghetti sauce to the meat, heat through, and move to the back burner until you're ready for it.

  4. While your meat sauce is waiting, put all your cheeses into a medium sized mixing bowl (moza, parmesan, and cottage). Add the milk and stir up. At this point you can add some salt and pepper if you like, for colour and flavour.

  5. Put a little bit of your meat sauce and some water into the bottom of a large, glass caserole dish, about 13x9 in size. Place three lasagne noodles into the dish, but don't have the noodles touching if possible. The noodles will expand as they cook. There should also be space between the ends of the noodles and the ends of the dish itself.

  6. Using a third of your meat sauce, cover all three noodles equally. Using half the cheese mixture, cover all three noodles equally.

  7. Add 3 more lasagne noodles on top, pressing down a bit as you lay them down. Add half of the remaining meat sauce then the remainder of your cheese mixture equally over the three noodles.

  8. Add your last 3 noodles, pressing down a bit, and add your remaining meat sauce equally over all three noodles. Evenly sprinkle on the 3/4 cups of moza cheese you put aside earlier over the top of the pasta dish.

  9. Place a large sheet of tinfoil, shiny side down, over your lasagne. I like to crinkle the edges tightly around the casserole dish so any moisture that builds up will drain back down into the dish instead of onto the bottom of my oven!

  10. Place the lasagne into your preheated oven and let cook about 45 minutes.

  11. Remove the tinfoil from the dish after the 45 minutes is up, and let cook another 10 minutes in the oven uncovered.

  12. Remove the casserole after your 10 minutes is up, and let stand for 15 minutes. This is very important. The lasagne will set in this time, and not fall apart like some lasagne's do. :D

  13. Enjoy!!!
