This sauce can be made quickly as a thinner sauce or cook it for a couple hours for a richer, thicker sauce.

Recipe Ingredients for Whole grain penne with spicy tomato sauce

2 tsp. olive oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
3 turkey italian sausage links
2 cans whole tomatoes, no salt added
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
1/8 tsp. splenda
1/4 tsp. thyme
1 tsp. basil
1 tsp. oregano flakes
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 tsp. grated parmesan cheese
6 3/5 oz. dry penne whole grain pasta

Recipe Directions for Whole grain penne with spicy tomato sauce

  1. Saute garlic and red pepper flakes, until tender. Cut each sausage link into 8 pieces and add them in with the garlic. Once sausage is browned, remove from pan with a slot spoon. Drain off any remaining oil.

  2. Add in both cans of whole tomatoes and mash up completely or puree. Add back in the sausage. and all the remaining spices. I let this cook for about 2 hours, uncovered as it was pretty thin when I started.

  3. Cook pasta until al dente, drain. Combine sauce with pasta and serve.

  4. I sprinkled 2 more tsps. of grated parmesan over the platter and snipped some fresh chives from my garden over top.

  5. Serve with a crusty bread and a big fat salad.
