Recipe Ingredients for White Sandwich Bread

1 1/2 tsp active yeast
1 1/2 cup water
1 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup olive oil
6 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar

Recipe Directions for White Sandwich Bread

  1. Use dry, Active, bakers yeast that comes in a packet. Use 1 packet in the recipe.

  2. Combine 1/2 cup warm water with the yeast and 1/2 tsp of the sugar, in a mixing bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes. If the yeast foams, then it's live. If it doesn't foam, you need fresher yeast.

  3. Beat the egg with the cup of water, cup of milk, and 1/4 cup of olive oil. Stir into the yeast mixer.

  4. Combine 3 cups of the flour, the sugar and the rest of the salt and stir into the liquid ingredients one cup at a time.

  5. Begin adding more flour, 1/2 cup at a time until you have a soft, sticky dough. Do not add all the remaining flour unless the dough requires it.

  6. Turn onto a flour board and knead with floured hands for 15 minutes until smooth and elastic. Or use the dough hook attachement on a stand mixer.

  7. Turn the kneaded dough into an oiled bowl and turn to coat. Cover with a clean cloth and set in a warm place to rise. Allow to rise until double in bulk, 1 to 3 hours.

  8. Punch the dough down and divide in two. Shape loaves and put into oiled 1 pound loaf pans. Cover and let rise until double in bulk, about an hour.

  9. Bake in a preheated 350 F oven for 20 to 30 minutes, until golden brown. Loaf is done when it sounds hollow when thumped on the bottom.

  10. Cool completely on a wire rack. Slice when completely cooled.
