Recipe Ingredients for Waldorf Astoria Red Velvet Cake

1/2 cup Crisco
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 oz red food coloring
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 tbsp vinegar
1 oz water
2 tbsp cocoa
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup Crisco
1 stick butter
1 cup milk
1/4 cup flour

Recipe Directions for Waldorf Astoria Red Velvet Cake

  1. NOTE: Frosting Ingredients begin after the cocoa

  2. Cream Crisco and sugar. Add eggs, coloring and vanilla. Add cocoa, salt, flour and buttermilk. Beat slowly (use your own judgement on beating).

  3. Stir in vinegar and baking soda. (Do not beat; fold.)

  4. Bake 30 min. at 350 in 2 round pans.

  5. For the frosting -- cook milk and flour until thick, add a little salt and cool.

  6. Mix butter, Crisco, and sugar on high speed until creamy.

  7. Add cooled flour mixture and 1 tsp vanilla. Beat until fluffy.

  8. Build a two tiered cake with frosting between the layers.
