When should I take my vitamin-mineral supplement?

Should the vitamins and minerals be available while I'm burning calories or while I'm asleep and my body is rebuilding?


Take your multivitamin in the morning with breakfast.  There is evidence that common B-vitamins may interfere with sleep when taken at bedtime.  An exception is with calcium supplements, which should be taken at bedtime to avoid lessening the absorption of iron and magnesium. Other vitamins and minerals enhance the absorption of each other when taken together in the food or pills. Vitamins taken on a full stomach are less likely to produce nausea. The timing of vitamin supplements has more to do with absorption and comfort than with their availability to perform bodily functions.
