Basic Sheppards pie with venison instead of lamb, mixed vegetibles, and a mashed potato top.

Recipe Ingredients for Venison Sheppards Pie with corn peas onion and garlic

6 red potatoes
2 tbsp butter
1/2 cup 2% milk
1 lb ground venison
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup sweet corn
1/2 cup peas
1 cup chopped carrots
3 tsp olive oil
5 cloves garlic
2 tsp flour
1 cup beef broth

Recipe Directions for Venison Sheppards Pie with corn peas onion and garlic

  1. Pre-heat ovent to 350

  2. Chop vegetibles and set aside.

  3. Clean potatoes, cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until fork tender- time depends on the size of the potatoes but usually about 20 minutes.

  4. In a heavy oven proof skillet (cast iron is perfect) Sautee onions and crush garlic cloves in 3 tsp of olive oil until translucent, then add ground venison and brown over medium high heat. stir in flour and half the broth and bring to a boil. Add chopped carrots, stir and simmer, losely covered for 10 minutes until carrots are tender. Add remaining vegitibles and broth and simmer uncovered until sauce thickens, usually about five minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.

  5. Mash potatoes, adding butter and milk, and when the meat mixture is ready cover with mashed potatoes, making sure to spread them to the edge of the skillet. Use the back of a spoon to pull up the potatoes into peaks.

  6. Place skillet in the oven and heat until the potatoes are slightly browned and the pie is hot and bubbly (you may wish to place a cookie sheet on the lower rack to catch spills.)
