Pasty's are famous in the UP and are like a potpie only better!

Recipe Ingredients for Veggie Pasty

4 cups flour
1 1/3 cups butter
1 tspn salt
1 cup cold water
5 cups potatoes, diced and peeled
2 cups carrots, chopped
1 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves of garlic
1 cup mushrooms, diced
3 cups broccoli, diced
1 small onion
2 tspn salt
1 tspn season salt
1 tspn black pepper
2 tbsp olive oil
8 ounces cream cheese
1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese
1/2 cup milk, for moistening and sealing crust

Recipe Directions for Veggie Pasty

  1. Crust: Cut butter into flour and salt until it forms pea-size lumps. Add cold water and knead until well blended.

  2. Form into 4 balls and chill in refrigerator for at least one hour.

  3. Roll in to 8 inch circle. If you don't have a lot of flour; which you need here you can you always press this out on seran wrap, that's what my wife does anyway, it works a lot better to keep the crust whole.

  4. Filling: In a tablespoon of oil or butter saute garlic and mushrooms. Cook mushrooms until soft and half the moisture is gone.

  5. Mix diced potatoes, carrots, cooked mushrooms, broccoli, onion, salt, season salt, black pepper and 2 tablespoon of olive oil in a large bowl.

  6. Put about 1 - 1.5 cups of filling on half of the pasty crust. Cut cream cheese block into eighths and then quarter cut each 1/8th. Scatter on top of pie filling. Add a tablespoon or two shredded cheddar cheese to top of filling. Moisten the edges with milk. (you can you use water, but milk works better) Fold over and pinch to seal. Brush outside lightly with milk. Curt three of four slits on top to vent steam.

  7. Put on a lightly-greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to an hour, or until crust is golden brown. Serve with veggie gravy or ketchup on the side.
