Some love mince pie while others consider it the British equivalent to hated American Christmas fruitcake. This veg*n version of the holiday pie has all the sweet dried fruits and spices without the meat and suet. (If using a premade crust, make sure it's lard-free.) This one's heavy on calories, so be sure to enjoy in moderation! Adapted from a recipe at cooks.com.

Recipe Ingredients for Vegan Mince Pie

448 gram frozen pie shells, two shells or refrigerated pie crusts
3 lbs apples, peeled and chopped
1/2 cups prunes, chopped
1/2 cups raisins
1/2 cups currants, dried
1/2 cups brown sugar, packed
1/4 cups molasses
2 oz brandy
1/4 cups orange juice
4 tbsp Earth Balance
2 tbsp dark rum
1 tbsp orange zest
1 tsp lemon zest
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Recipe Directions for Vegan Mince Pie

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

  2. In a large, heavy saucepan, cook over low heat until the apples are soft and the volume is reduced to a single 9-inch pie's filling. (Approximately 1.5-2 hours.)

  3. Remove from heat. Allow to cool completely before placing in pie crusts. (May be prepared in advance and refrigerated overnight.)

  4. Prepare pie crusts per instructions on package and spoon filling into lower crust. Cover as directed with upper crust.

  5. Bake as directed, until crust is golden and mince is bubbling.

  6. Allow to cool completely before serving.
