Nice and mild. A real comfort food. Mostly smooth, perhaps still just slightly lumpy but not so you'd really notice. Perhaps if I thickened it more, it might have gotten lumpier. Give it a whiz in the FP to make it smoother.

Recipe Ingredients for Vanilla custard

2 cups milk
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp cornstarch
2 tbsp sugar

Recipe Directions for Vanilla custard

  1. Mix cornstarch with 1/4 cup milk.

  2. Mix eggs with sugar.

  3. Combine the egg mix with the cornstarch mix.

  4. Heat milk til just hot, not boiling.

  5. Add the hot milk to the egg/cornstarch/sugar mix.

  6. Put back on heat for about 2 or 3 minutes, stirring constantly, check often to be sure it's not burning on the bottom. When cool it will be about twice as thick.

  7. After cooking, add a little vanilla and/or other things eg. nutella, orange zest, whatever you like.

  8. I really like this, I feel so English when I have some..will use with the jam roly poly.
