"Mother of Ali" or "Ali's Mother" is the translation of the Arabic name for this Egyptian dessert which is often served on special occasions such as Ramadan or Eid. It is similar to bread pudding.

Recipe Ingredients for Umm Ali

10 oz of puff pastry
1/2 cup chopped nuts (pistachio, pecan, walnut, hazelnut ? optional, to taste)
1 cup rasins (optional)
1 cup flaked coconut (optional)
2 tbs lemon juice
3/4 cups sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cardamom
1 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
2 tsp rose water
1 cup heavy cream

Recipe Directions for Umm Ali

  1. Preparation time 30 minutes, Cooking time 30 Minutes.

  2. Preheat the oven to 375F

  3. Butter a medium to large size round glass baking dish.

  4. Put the puff pastry on a baking pan and bake it in the oven for 20 ? 25 minutes (or as directed on package) until golden brown and flaky, then remove from the oven and allow it to cool for 5 minutes.

  5. In the glass-baking dish, combine the chopped nuts, raisins, coconut, and lemon juice. When the puff pastry is cool enough to touch, crumble it into the baking dish adding it to the mixture. Stir the mixture to evenly distribute ingredients.

  6. In a small - medium pot or saucepan, heat the milk, sugar, cardamom, and cinnamon over medium heat. Mix continuously until it starts to boil then immediately stir in the beaten egg and remove from heat.

  7. Pour the milk and sugar mixture over the puff pastry and nut mixture.

  8. Sprinkle the rose water over the entire mixture.

  9. Pour the heavy cream over the top of the entire mixture.

  10. Put the baking dish in the oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes until the top starts to turn a golden brown. (Some ovens may produce better results by cooking for 20 minutes and then turning on the broiler for an additional 10 minutes.)

  11. Remove from oven and serve hot.
