Turkey Tamale Pie Recipe

A combination of spiced ground turkey with a hearty corn-tamale topping. Great for football Sundays. We usually add a cup of frozen (& thawed) or fresh corn to the turkey mixture.

Recipe Ingredients for Turkey Tamale Pie

1 lb ground turkey
1/4 t salt
4 T chili powder
1 1/2 c salsa
4 oz diced green chiles
16 oz pinto beans
2 1/4 oz black olives, sliced, drained
1/2 c cilantro, fresh, chopped

TOPPING:
1 c cornmeal, yellow
1 t salt
1 c cheddar cheese, sharp, grated

Recipe Directions for Turkey Tamale Pie

  1. Heat a 12-inch ovenproof skillet or large roasting pan on the stove at medium-high heat. Add turkey, lightly season with salt and cook, stirring until it loses its raw color. Stir in 3 T of the chili powder, then the salsa, green chiles, beans, olives and half the cilantro. Simmer about 5 minutes.

  2. Bring 3 cups of water, cornmeal, remaining chili powder and 1 t salt to boil in a large pot, whisking frequently, until mixture thickens to mush consistency (like grits). Pour mush over meat mixture, spreading with a spatula to completely cover. Sprinkle with cheese and remaining cilantro. Top with thinly sliced red onions, if desired.

  3. With oven rack in middle postion, turn on broiler. Broil tamale pie until cheese melts and mush gets crusty, about 5 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes, and serve.
