Sloppy Joes are an American classic favored among kids. Lightening it up with turkey and adding in some vegetables makes it a healthier version of this dish. Serve on hamburger buns or sandwich thins; just be sure to use a fork and knife because this saucy sandwich lives up to its messy promise!

Recipe Ingredients for Turkey Sloppy Joes

1 lb 99% fat free ground turkey
1/2 large onion, diced
1/2 green pepper, diced
7 1/2 oz stewed tomatoes, drained and chopped
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tbsp cider vinegar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper

Recipe Directions for Turkey Sloppy Joes

  1. In a large nonstick saute pan over medium-high heat, add the olive oil and cook the turkey, onions, and pepper for 5-6 minutes, or until turkey is no longer pink.

  2. Add the chopped stewed tomatoes, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire, vinegar, salt, and pepper.

  3. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. Divide the turkey evenly among 4 buns and serve immediately.
