This is an attempt at a low sodium meatball sub. Still pretty high in sodium and fat so make it a once in a while meal....

Recipe Ingredients for Turkey Meatball Pitas

6 whole wheat pita
1 3/10 lb extra lean ground turkey
1 medium onion, grated
3 cloves garlic, grated
1 egg white
1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
1 tsp pepper
3 tbs basil, fresh, chopped
28 oz crushed tomatoes, no salt
1 tsp oregano, dried
1/3 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

Recipe Directions for Turkey Meatball Pitas

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

  2. Combine turkey, 1/2 of grated onion, 1 clove garlic, egg white, plain bread crumbs, 1/2 tsp pepper, and basil in large mixing bowl.

  3. Mix thoroughly but don't over mix, it will make meat tough.

  4. Roll about 1 tbs. into ball and flatten a little to make medium sized meatball and place on broiler rack. Continue until all of the meat mixture is rolled into meatballs.

  5. Bake meatballs in preheated oven about 30 to 45 minutes or until browned and done.

  6. While meatballs are baking, heat a large skillet over medium heat.

  7. Combine tomatoes, 1/2 onion, 2 cloves garlic, oregano, and 1/2 tsp pepper in skillet.

  8. Warm over medium heat until meatballs are done.

  9. Take meatballs out of the oven and put them into the sauce in the pan. Allow them to cook together for about 15 minutes.

  10. While meatballs are cooking in sauce, Warm Pitas in the oven.

  11. Once meatballs and sauce are ready, put 3 to 4 meatballs in each pita, top with sauce and mozzarella cheese. Put under the broiler long enough to melt cheese.

  12. Serve immediately.
