Recipe Ingredients for Turkey Chili

1 1/2 lbs turkey, ground, 94% fat free
16 oz chickpeas/garbanzo beans or kidney beans, not drained
28 oz tomatoes, diced, not drained
1 small onion, chopped (or cut in half for grilling)
1 small red pepper, chopped (or cut in half for grilling)
1 small green pepper, chopped (or cut in half for grilling)
4 cloves garlic, miced
4 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp cocoa powder, unsweetened
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp basil
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp cracked black pepper

Recipe Directions for Turkey Chili

  2. In a large skillet over med/high heat, heat a tablespoon of olive oil, then add the onions& garlic. After about 3 minutes, add the green peppers. After another two minutes, add the red peppers. Cook another 5-8 minutes. Place cooked veggies in a bowl to the side. A healthier alternative: cut the onions and pepper in half, grill them for 20 minutes turning occassionally. cool for 10-15 minutes, then chop them up for a healthier, smokey flavor.

  3. In same large skillet, heat the other 3 tablespoons of olive oil and then add the ground turkey. season with salt and pepper. Cook on medium-high for about 20 minutes, breaking up and stirring occassionally for even cooking until an even light, golden brown. Do not over cook.

  4. Add the tomatoes and tomato paste into a dutch oven, large pot or Crock Pot on high heat. stir in the turkey. Stir in the veggies. Add the spices to taste. Once it starts to boil, reduce heat to low and cover, stirring occassionally.
