Recipe Ingredients for Traditional Creamed Onions

8 ounces pearl onions
4 cups water
6 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 cups milk
1 salt to taste
1 ground black pepper to taste

Recipe Directions for Traditional Creamed Onions

  1. Peel onions, and drop into boiling water. Cook until tender.

  2. Drain onions, reserving liquid. Set onions aside while you make the sauce.

  3. Melt butter or margarine in a saucepan over medium heat.

  4. Whisk in flour to make a paste.

  5. Mix together cooking water and milk.

  6. Add milk mixture slowly to the saucepan, stirring constantly, and cook until thickened.

  7. Add salt and pepper to taste.

  8. Add onions, and transfer to a serving dish.
