A simple tomato sauce with ground beef and Italian sausage.

Recipe Ingredients for Tomato Sauce with Meat

2 celery stalks, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 carrot, shredded
5 cloves garlic
2 tbsp olive oil
2 cups white wine, divided
3/4 lb lean ground beef
3 Italian sausage links, casings removed
56 oz tomato sauce
28 oz crushed tomatoes
6 oz tomato paste
1 tsp basil, dried
1 tsp thyme, dried
1 tsp rosemary, dried
1 tsp oregano, dried
1 tsp fennel seed, crushed
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes

Recipe Directions for Tomato Sauce with Meat

  1. Heat a large dutch oven over medium heat. Add the olive oil until it shimmers, saute celery and onions until the onions are translucent. Toss in garlic and carrots, stir until garlic is fragrant and the oil takes on an orange color. Add 1 cup of wine and simmer until reduced by half.

  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Brown beef and sausage, add tomato paste and stir until the meat is well coated. Pour in the remaining wine and let simmer until wine reduces by half, cover.

  3. Add the tomatoes to the vegetables, stir to combine. When they begin to boil, reduce heat to low/medium-low and stir in herbs, cover and let simmer 1 hour.

  4. Combine meat mixture with the tomatoes and simmer uncovered until you are ready to eat.
