Tofu Steak with celery, green pepper, mushrooms and onions

Recipe Ingredients for Swiss Steak

600 grams tofu
2 tsp marmite
285 grams water
55 grams flour
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp pepper
4 tbsp vegetable oil
2 onions
225 grams tomatoes
2 stalks celery
1 pepper
170 grams mushrooms

Recipe Directions for Swiss Steak

  1. Freeze the tofu, defrost, squeeze out excess water, slice to about 1/2 inch thick slices and marinade in marmite dissolved in the water for an hour or two, turning once or twice.

  2. Mix flour, paprika, oregano and pepper. Take the slices from the marinade one at a time, squeeze out excess marinade, coat and fry in 2 tbsp of the oil for a minute or so per side. Keep the marinade.

  3. Put the tofu steaks in an oiled casserole dish.

  4. Chop the onions and fry in the rest of the oil for 2-3 min.

  5. Chop the celery, pepper, mushrooms and tomatoes (peel the tomatoes first.) Add to the pan.

  6. Add the marinade to the pan, boil and simmer for 3 minutes.

  7. Combine 2 tbsp flour with 2 tbsp water. Add to pan, stir till thickened.

  8. Pour the pan contents over the steaks and bake for 30 min at 180 C.
