Basic pastry recipe for crumble topping, 8-9" flan base, or 9-10" round pie crust.

Recipe Ingredients for Sue's Basic Pastry (for a crumble or flan) yummy

250 g wholemeal flour
125 g flora original
4 tbsp water

Recipe Directions for Sue's Basic Pastry (for a crumble or flan) yummy

  1. Put ice cubes in jug with water.

  2. Rub in flour and cold refridgerated margarine.

  3. Pour slowly 1 tbsp of iced water into mixture and mix in. Repeat quickly until dough is ready, ie if it can squeeze into a ball. Do not use more than total 5 tbsp of water.

  4. Put pastry into fridge for 20 mins. During this time you can prepare pie, flan or crumble filling.

  5. Place dough on floured surface and roll to required thickness. Roll it gently onto rolling pin and then unroll it onto flan or pie dish.

  6. For flan, prick pastry all over with a fork, spread some dried beans over it to prevent puffing up, and bake for 10-12 mins in hot oven at 425F / 218C / Gas 7. Remove and cool on wire rack.

  7. Any leftover pastry can be used to make tarts or pasties filled with savoury or sweet filling.
