Recipe Ingredients for Substitute Powdered Sugar

1 cup No Calorie Sweetener
1 teaspoon cornstarch

Recipe Directions for Substitute Powdered Sugar

  1. Place the measured Splenda in the mixer or food processor. PAY ATTENTION: It is EXTREMELY important that you use the granulated form of Splenda rather than the original, common Splenda. The standard Splenda sweetener formulation, most commonly used in coffee packets, is designed to melt quickly in liquids; it will not work for making confectioners' sugar. The granulated formulation has a firmer structure, helping it bind with the cornstarch (or flour).

  2. Add one teaspoon of cornstarch for each cup of Splenda measured into the mixer or food processor. According to the Food website, you can opt to use two tablespoons of flour instead of one teaspoon of cornstarch. The difference is both in texture and calorie count. While flour and cornstarch add about the same number of calories per measurement, you need much more flour than cornstarch per cup of sugar. Cornstarch also generally provides a much coarser texture, which people tend to like better.

  3. Blend the Splenda and cornstarch together for one minute or until you reach the desired texture. It may be necessary to stop the blender occasionally as the mixture clings to the sides of the mixing bowl. Use the rubber spatula to gently scrape down the sides and the blenders a few times during the process.

  4. Store the artificial powdered sugar in an airtight container. It should remain usable and fluffed for up to one month. You can use it as you would normally use powdered sugar in an uncooked, unblended form. However, the artificial powdered sugar will not provide the structural support needed for icing or the caramelizing properties of traditional sugars.
