Grandma's recipe, not including dumplings. (Each serving is one-fifth of a pot.)

Recipe Ingredients for Stew

1 lb steak
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 onion
2 carrots
2 potatoes
2/3 cup peas

Recipe Directions for Stew

  1. Cut up steak and toss in flour-salt-pepper mixture.

  2. Brown in olive oil.

  3. Add onions and saute until onions are limp.

  4. Add enough water to cover the meat, then cover and let simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour if using steak, 2-3 hours if using stew meat.

  5. Chop vegetables and add to stew; cover with water and simmer covered for 1 hour.

  6. If making dumplings, add batter in spoonfuls 20 minutes before the stew is done.
