A traditional Australian meat pie.

Recipe Ingredients for Steak and Mushroom Pie

30 g plain flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp nutmeg
457 g chuck steak
2 tbsp thyme, chopped
300 g button mushrooms
1 tbsp lemon juice
250 ml beef stock
250 ml ale
1 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp worcestershire
125 g puff pastry
10 g egg yolk
75 g onion

Recipe Directions for Steak and Mushroom Pie

  1. Mix the flour, nutmeg, salt and pepper in a shallow bowl. Dust the beef with this mixture and place in a prepared dish. Scatter with the herbs, then add the mushrooms. Drizzle lemon juice over the top and add enough stock to cover meat and mushrooms, then stir in the tomato sauce and brown sauce.

  2. Cover the filling with pastry and glaze this with the egg yolk.

  3. Bake at 200?C for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden. Place a sheet of aluminium foil over the pie, reduce the temperature to 180?C and bake for another 2 hours.
