Best with fresh vegetables in season, this can be a meal on its own, or a fabulous accompaniment to any heavy meat dish. Top with Bulgarian white cheese (available at Whole Foods) to turn it into a Sopska salad. Hot peppers and vinegar are optional, and their removal will not detract from the dish. Proportions are highly approximate and vary greatly from family to family.

Recipe Ingredients for Srpska Salata / Serbian Salad

4 medium raw Tomato
2 medium Cucumber, Peeled
1 medium raw Onion Yellow
3 pepper Hungarian Wax Peppers
3 tsp Unico Sunflower Oil
3 serving Apple Cider Vinegar

Recipe Directions for Srpska Salata / Serbian Salad

  1. Chop onion, season with salt and sunflower oil and toss to coat thoroughly.

  2. [optional] Chop hot peppers, add to mixture.

  3. Peel and chop cucumber, add to mixure.

  4. Chop tomatos and add to mixure.

  5. Allow to sit a room temperature for 30 minutes or longer, then adjust salt and splash with the apple cider vinegar to taste [optional].

  6. Best served at room temperature.

  7. Notes and Substiutions: this dish depends on having great, fresh ingredients. Try to buy in season and/or ones ripened naturally. Tomatos should not be refrigerated before use. Substitutions: Jalapeno for the Hungarian Wax pepper; Cherry tomatos for the regular ones if only "mealy" tomatos are available.
