Split pea soup made with smoked ham hocks

Recipe Ingredients for split pea soup

8 cups water
1 pound pork, cured, ham, whole
1 medium onion
2 medium carrots
500 grams split peas
1 tsp peppercorns
1 1/2 tsp salt

Recipe Directions for split pea soup

  1. bring ham hock to boil in the water. Add salt and peppercorns and whole peeled onion and simmer for about 3 hours, skimming as required.

  2. remove hock and separate meat from skin and bones. discard skin and bones.

  3. Add carrots, chopped - simmer for 10 minutes more

  4. Add split peas - simmer for another hour
