Usually use a low sodium chicken broth which I couldn't seem to incorporate into the recipe. The sodium level is therefore not correct. This is a hearty, delicious, and filling meal that is great with a crusty baguette.

Recipe Ingredients for Split pea soup with ham

1 lb. dry split peas
1 lb. ham, cubed
1 tablespoon thyme
1 cup pearl onions
3 large carrots, peeled and chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed and chopped
2 cups chicken broth
4 cup water

Recipe Directions for Split pea soup with ham

Soak peas overnight for a faster cooking time. In a 6 - 8 quart pot combine all the ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until peas are tender. This takes about 3 hours on the stove.
