This is spicy take on a traditional Iriquois recipe I found on All Recipes. The originator says, "The Iriquois Indians cultivated and used the Three Sisters (corn, squash and beans) in their diet. This is a recipe passed down by our relatives. You may use regular corn instead of hominy, but hominy is more traditional." I found the original to be a little bland, so added the garlic, shallots and spices. The original calls for only salt and pepper.

Recipe Ingredients for Spicy Three Sisters Soup

2 medium onions or shallots, diced
6 cloves garlic, diced
2 1/2 cups canned hominy, drained
2 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and snapped
2 1/2 cups butternut squash, peeled and cubed
2 cups potatoes, diced and peeled
5 cups warm water
1 1/2 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 tsp white pepper
1/2 tsp ground clove
1 1/2 teaspoon paprika (spicy)
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon salt

  2. Combine shallots, garlic, hominy, butternut squash, potatoes in a large pot.

  3. Dissolve bouillon in water and add to pot.

  4. Add spices.

  5. Bring to a boil, then simmer on low heat until the vegetables are soft.

  6. Blend the flour into the melted butter, then stir into the soup.

  7. Increase heat to medium and cook for 5 more minutes until thickened.
