Can you give me specific nutrient requirements for seniors?

For seniors, what is the recommended daily intake for sodium, sugar, cholesterol, fat, fiber, protein, etc.?


According to the Dietary Reference Intakes, adults over age 51 have the following daily nutrient requirements:

  • Sodium: 2300 mg
  • Fiber: 21 g
  • Cholesterol: 300 mg
  • Calcium: 1200 mg
  • Fat, total: 30% of total calories, maximum
  • Fat, saturated: 10% of total calories, maximum
  • Sugar, added: 10% of total calories, maximum

To find the "percent of total calories", multiply your calorie requirements by X percent, and then, to convert to grams of fat, divide the answer by 9, and to convert to grams of sugar, divide the answer by 4. For example, 10% of calories from saturated fat on a 2000 calorie diet would be 22 grams.
