Not really as bad for you as one might think as long as it is eaten in moderation. Try using a smaller plate so that you serving fills the plate. It's surpising how the eyes can fool the stomach.

Recipe Ingredients for Spaghetti with meat sauce (bolagnaise)

1 lb spaghetti
1 lb lean ground beef
1 onion
1 tsp garlic (minced)
1 tbl Basil
1/2 tbl Oregano
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 can tomato paste (5 1/2 oz)
3 cups Diced tomatoes (19 oz)
1 tbl Olive oil
1 cup sliced mushrooms
2 tbl butter (salted)
1 tbl sugar

Recipe Directions for Spaghetti with meat sauce (bolagnaise)

  1. Add olive oil to a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add diced onions and sliced mushrooms. Saute until the onions are translucent. Remove from pan and set aside.

  2. Add meat to the same saucepan and brown well. Add the minced garlic to the pan, being careful not to burn garlic, as it will become bitter. Add diced tomatoes and stir pan to scrape up the brown bits on the bottom of the pan (loads of flavour there). Add the tomato paste and herbs (dry herbs, if using fresh, double the quantity). Add seasoning and sugar (reduces the acid in the tonmatoes). Return onions and mushrooms to the sauce. Allow to simmer for 30 minutes.

  3. Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan, over high heat (keeping the lid on will hasten the proccess). Add plenty of salt to the water, after it starts to boil. Add pasta and cook acording to manufacturer's instructions. Drain pasta and toss with the butter.

  4. Pour sauce over pasta and enjoy.
