The slow cooker braises the meat to tender perfection in this traditional dish. I omitted the 1/2 tsp to be pounded into the meat to drop the sodium to be very close to that of the original recipe. Hunt's Light has 430 mg of sodium per half cup. From the American Diabetes Association. all- purpose flour, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, boneless top round steak, onion, garlic, green bell pepper, Hunt's light spaghetti sauce, egg noodles, balsamic vinegar cvt

Recipe Ingredients for Slow Cooker Swiss Steak (ADA)

2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp dried basil (2003)
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp black pepper
18 ounces braised beef top round (13438), net from 1 1/2 lb select boneless top round steak
1 large onion, sliced
3 clove garlic, thinly sliced
1 medium green pepper, cut into 1-inch chunks
375 g (1 1/2 cups) Hunt's light spaghetti sauce (97148)
8 oz dry NO YOLKS egg noodles
1 tsp balsamic vinegar (91979)

Recipe Directions for Slow Cooker Swiss Steak (ADA)

  1. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, dried basil, oregano and pepper. (Optional 1/2 tsp salt if using a NAS sauce.)

  2. Cut the beef into 6 pieces. Sprinkle half the flour mixture over one side of the beef. Using a meat tenderizer pound the flour into the meat. Turn over. Repeat with the remaining flour mixture pounding until all of the flour is absorbed into the meat.

  3. Put the onion in the slow cooker. Put the meat on the onion. Sprinkle with the garlic, then with the bell pepper. Spoon the spaghetti sauce over all. Cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours until the meat is fork tender.

  4. About 15 minutes before serving time, prepare the noodles using the package directions omitting the salt and oil.

  5. To serve, spoon the noodles onto a plate. Top with meat. Stir the vinegar into the sauce. Spoon the sauce over all. Sprinkle with fresh basil if desired.
