Can substitute ground chicken or turkey for beef. Or go vegetarian by using ground meat substitute instead. Can eat it like chili - reduce cooking time by 15 min. to get right consistency. Add 2 tsp Worchestershire sauce and 1/2 chopped jalepeno pepper if you like it hot.

Recipe Ingredients for sloppy joes

1 pound ground beef, extra lean
1 onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 tbsp chili powder
3 cups diced tomatoes, canned
1/4 cup oats, large flake

Recipe Directions for sloppy joes

  1. # Cook beef in large deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat about 8 minutes. Add onion, garlic, green (and jalepeno if using) peppers and cook 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, oats, chili powder (and Worchestershire sauce, if using). Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally or until thickened.

  2. # Scoop sloppy joe mixture into pita halves and top with lettuce and tomato.
