Recipe Ingredients for Skillet Spaghetti

12 oz lean ground turkey or beef
4 oz turkey sausage
4 cloves of garlic
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp oregano
28 oz crushed tomatoes
8 oz whole wheat spaghetti, broken into 2 in. pieces
2 cups water
1/4 cup fat-free half and half
6 tbsp finely chopped basil, if desired
1 cup shredded Italian cheese blend, low fat

Recipe Directions for Skillet Spaghetti

  1. Adjust rack to upper middle portion in oven.

  2. Using an oven safe skillet, saute beef and sausage breaking into pieces until cooked through and no longer pink

  3. Drain meat and remove all fat from skillet

  4. When meat is drained return to skillet. Add garlic, pepper flakes, and oregano. Saute until fragrant, about 1 minute

  5. Stir in tomatoes, broken spaghetti, and water.

  6. Cover and cook, stirring often, until spaghetti begins to soften, about 7 minutes

  7. Reduce heat to medium-low and continue to simmer until spaghetti is al dente, about 7 minutes

  8. While spaghetti is cooking pre-heat broiler.

  9. Stir in half-and-half, basil, and 1/3 cup cheese.

  10. Sprinkle remaining cheese and broil until cheese is melted and lightly browned

  11. Cool for 5 minutes before serving
