Can I do sit-ups with a hernia?
Asked by anonymous on Sep 10, 2010 in Fitness

A plastic surgeon recently found a hernia in my belly button during an examination. I am not sure how big it is. Can I still do sit ups?  I just want to be safe.

Do not do sit ups until you check with the surgeon who examined you.  The usual recommendation is to avoid heavy abdominal exercises with umbilical hernias, but every case is a little different.  Small hernias are usually repaired before they expand and become a problem, and so I wouldn’t be surprised if the surgeon advised you to limit yourself to walking and gentle yoga for now.  Read about umbilical hernias at
