Recipe Ingredients for Simple Tomato Sauce

1/3 cup butter, unsalted
1 onion, small, thinly sliced crosswise
1 lb tomatoes, peeled, seeded and sliced lengthwise
1 salt
1/4 cup basil leaves, torn into small pieces

Recipe Directions for Simple Tomato Sauce

  1. Melt butter in large frying pan over medium heat. Add onion and 3-4 T water, cover and cook gently, stirring occasionally until tender and completely translucent, about 10 minutes.

  2. Add tomatoes cover partially and cook over low heat until a thickened, creamy consistency is achieved about 20 minutes. Add salt to taste and basil and stir well. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for a few minutes so basil can release its aroma.
