Old fashioned individual shortcakes.

Recipe Ingredients for Shortcakes

4 cups flour
2 tablespoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons sugar
12 tablespoons butter, cold cut into small pieces
1 1/2 cups 1% milk

Recipe Directions for Shortcakes

  1. Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar together. Drop in the butter, toss to coat with flour, and then rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture is pebbly.

  2. Pour the milk over the mixture and toss gently with a fork to form a soft dough.

  3. Spoon the dough into 12 mounds (about 1/4 cup each) onto the baking sheet. Pat each mound until it's about 3/4 to 1 inch high. Bake 12 to 15 minutes in a 425 degree oven, or until the shortcakes are puffed and just barely golden. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool slightly. Serve warm.
