Recipe Ingredients for Shepherd's Pie

1 lb extra lean ground beef
1/2 lb extra lean ground turkey
1 medium onion
1 carrot
1 stalk celery
3 cloves garlic
1/2 cup red wine
380 ml tomato sauce
1/2 cup frozen peas
1/2 cup frozen corn
3 lb russet potatoes
2 lb yams
1/4 cup butter
1 1/2 cup half and half cream
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese

Recipe Directions for Shepherd's Pie

  1. Steam the potatoes and yams until tender.

  2. Brown the meat. Drain the fat if there is any.

  3. Add diced onion, carrot, celery, garlic and corn starch. Cook for 5 minutes.

  4. Deglaze with red wine.

  5. Add tomato sauce, peas and corn. Warm through.

  6. Preheat oven to 350.

  7. Mash the potatoes and yams with butter and cream.

  8. Spoon meat mixture into a casserole.

  9. Top with mashed potato mixture.

  10. Sprinkle with cheese.

  11. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden and bubbly.
