Traditional style Scottish shortbread

Recipe Ingredients for Scottish Shortbread

1 3/4 cups flour
4 tbsp sugar
4 ounces butter
1 egg yolk
2 tbsp milk

Recipe Directions for Scottish Shortbread

  1. Sift flour into a bowl.

  2. Add sugar.

  3. Rub butter in with fingers until mixture is crumbly.

  4. Make a well in center of bowl and add egg yolk and milk.

  5. Work into a smooth dough.

  6. Transfer dough into 8 inch diameter cake pan.

  7. Press dough out to sides with fingers, crimp edges with fork.

  8. Mark into slices, then chill in refrigerator for 30 minutes.

  9. Preheat oven to 400 deg, then bake for 5 minutes.

  10. Reduce heat to 300 deg, and bake for further 30 minutes or until shortbread begins to turn light golden color.

  11. Remove from oven and cut into slices while still warm.

  12. Do NOT remove from pan until fully cooled.

  13. Sprinkle with a little sugar before serving.
