The interplay between sweet and salty flavors makes dishes come alive. Whether you?re looking for a seasonal idea for your next holiday dinner, a side dish for roasted meat, or just a way to use your extra apples, this recipe is it. With historical roots going as far back as 2000 BCE in Mesopotamia, leeks add delicious flavor to a wide variety of dishes from soups to frittatas to stir fries and so on without overpowering them. Since leeks are in the same plant family (Allium) as garlic and onions and are packed with Vitamins K, A, and folate, they likely have similar health promoting benefits like cardiovascular support, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Recipe Ingredients for Sauteed Apple and Leeks

2 Apple Apples
2 leek Leeks, (Bulb And Lower Leaf-portion)
2 tsp Fresh Churned Butter Unsalted
1/4 tsp Nutmeg
1/4 tsp Kosher Salt
0.25 tsp Pepper, Black

Recipe Directions for Sauteed Apple and Leeks

  1. Trim the root end off the leeks then thinly slice the entire leek. Wash the leeks in a large bowl filled with cold water, draining them between water changes in a fine mesh sieve. Change the water several times until no more dirt and sand are found. (The dark green parts of leeks are typically a little tougher, less flavorful, and more fibrous than the lighter parts, but it depends on the size and age of the leek and they definitely can be eaten. Cook the dark green parts longer and trim off the dead ends. If you don?t want to use them, you can reserve them for making stock or with another longer-cooked dish)

  2. Wash and peel the apples. Then thinly slice them.

  3. In a large sauté pan, heat half the butter over medium heat. When sizzling, add the leeks and sauté until the leeks are soft, about 5 minutes. Remove the leeks from the pan and set aside.

  4. Turn the heat up to high and melt the other half of the butter. When sizzling, add the apple slices and cook until they are lightly golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.

  5. Turn the heat back down to medium, add the leeks to the apple in the pan, combine well, and heat them together, about 1 minute.

  6. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper to taste.
