A few vegetables & a little oatmeal help make this burger larger and tastier than the usual "diet" burger(not to mention adding a little fibre). For added zip, cover the patties with salsa and roast them for an hour.

Recipe Ingredients for Salsa Burgers

1 1/4 lb extra lean ground beef
1/3 c salsa (or ketchup)
1/2 c oatmeal
3 T wheat germ
3/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 tsp. dried basil
2 tsp. dried oregano
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 large egg
1/2 cup shredded carrots
1/4 cup green bell pepper, minced
1/4 cup red bell pepper, minced

Recipe Directions for Salsa Burgers

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and blend well.

  2. Using a weigh scale, separate meat into 4.5 ounce portions.

  3. Brown the patties in a skillet or on your grill.

  4. Place the patties in a shallow roasting pan. Top with a jar of your favourite salsa. Bake at 325 for 1 hour.
