Recipe Ingredients for Rustic Italian Bread

1 cup hot water
2 tbsp olive oil
2 cups bread flour
1 cup white flour
2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 oz active dry yeast
1/2 egg white, beaten

Recipe Directions for Rustic Italian Bread

  1. Spoon flour into measuring cup. Mix flour, sugar, salt, yeast. Mix thoroughly.

  2. Add water and oil.

  3. Knead dough 10 minutes, or until smooth.

  4. Place in lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and cloth and let rise 40 minutes.

  5. PUnch dough down.

  6. Place dough on baking sheet and cover with inverted bowl. Allow to rest for 15 minutes.

  7. Shape dough into baguette shaped loaf about 12" long.

  8. Place on lightly floured baking sheet and cover with cloth. Allow to rise for 40 minutes.

  9. Heat oven to 375.

  10. Make 1" deep slash lengthwise in top of loaf.

  11. Brush with egg whites.

  12. Bake for 30 minutes or until loaf sounds hollow.
