A favorite Greek dessert with a little bit of a twist.

Recipe Ingredients for Rum-Spiked Baklava

1 cup light brown sugar
1 cup water
1 cup honey
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 lb phyllo dough
2 sticks of butter
2 1/2 cups pecans
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 cup rum

Recipe Directions for Rum-Spiked Baklava

  1. To prepare the syrup, combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, until the mixture begins to thicken. Remove from heat and set aside.

  2. Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon and chopped nuts. Mix thoroughly.

  3. Preheat oven for 350 degrees. Brush a 9" x 13" baking dish with butter. Lay down two sheets of phyllo dough. Brush the top layer with butter. Lay down two more sheets of dough. Brush the top layer with butter. Repeat again with two more sheets of dough. Spread one-third of the filling mixture on this top layer. Repeat the process two more times: six sheets of dough (every other layer brushed with butter) and one-third of filling. Top with six sheets of dough in the same manner and brush the top layer with butter.

  4. Cut into diamonds, squares, or any shape you wish. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Pour any remaining butter over the top (melt more if necessary) then return to oven to bake for another 20 minutes, until it is golden brown on the top. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.

  5. Combine syrup and rum. Pour over the top, making sure to pour along the lines where you have cut. Allow to return to room temperature before serving.
