My personal breakfast staple food. Now sweetening with molasses and Zante currants, simmered in water before adding oats. Making larger amount and reheating during week. Rev. Jan 2011 by Lolly074.

Recipe Ingredients for ROLLED OATS BREAKFAST BLEND

4 cups water
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (or Pumpkin Pie spice mix)
1/4 cup currants, Zante, dried
2 tablespoons Blackstrap Molasses
2 cups organic rolled oats

Recipe Directions for ROLLED OATS BREAKFAST BLEND

  1. Add spices and dried fruit to water as it comes to a boil at medium heat.

  2. If desired, add molasses and stir (this sweetener is optional, but adds food value along with the sweetness)

  3. Add rolled oats, stirring into liquid mixture.

  4. Bring to a gentle boil, then lower heat to low and cover pan.

  5. Allow oats to soften and swell for 5 minutes, covered, at low heat.

  6. Remove from heat and stir; let sit for 5 minutes, then serve.

  7. If only one or two people are eating this first time, cool remaining oats down, then refrigerate in a tightly closed container. May be kept in refrigerator and used incrementally for up to five days and taste will still be acceptable. (I don't know what happens to the nutritional values when eaten as a leftover.)

  8. NOTE: I prepare a half-cup of double-strength non-fat powdered milk by mixing three tablespoons of the milk powder with 4 ounces of hot water to pour on top of the oatmeal. This addition maintains the warmth of the hot oatmeal but increases the nutritional value of the meal. If you regularly pour cream or half-and-half or milk onto your oatmeal, this warm, dense, non-fat hot milk alternative might be worth a try.
