I got this recipe from Allrecipes.com. This is by far so much better than the store bought stuff! This also makes a HUGE batch. I make this every few months and freeze 80% of it. And pull a small container out when I want some refried beans. 1 serving size is 2 large tablespoons (enough for a taco or two). You also do not have to add the chicken broth. You can use just water or add a veggie broth instead. I use it to add a depth of flavor. As long as the liquid is about 9 cups, you're fine.

Recipe Ingredients for Refried beans without the refry

1 onion, peeled and halved
3 cups dry pinto beans, rinsed
1/2 fresh jalepeno pepper, seeded and chopped
2 T garlic, minced
1 3/4 t black pepper, fresh ground
1/4 t cumin
5 cups water
4 cups low sodium chicken broth

Recipe Directions for Refried beans without the refry

  1. Add everything to slow cooker and stir to combine.

  2. Cook on high for 8 hours, adding more liquid if needed.

  3. Once the beans have cooked, strain and reserve the liquid.

  4. Mash the beans, adding reserved liquid -as needed- to attain desired consistency.

  5. You may or may not have to add salt.
