Simple, quick-to-make spicy tamarind rice.

Recipe Ingredients for Puliyodarai.

1 cup rice
1 tbsp tamarind, paste
1 tsp vegetable oil
1/2 tbsp chickpeas
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp pepper, red, dried, powder
1 salt to taste
2 1/2 cups water

Recipe Directions for Puliyodarai.

  1. steam the rice using 2.5 cups of water.

  2. cool, keep aside.

  3. in a wok heat the oil, add mustard seeds.

  4. when mustard splutters, add the chickpeas, saute till chick peas turn golden brown.

  5. add the salt, chillie powder and tamarind paste and saute on low flame.

  6. add the steamed rice and mix well.
