Motivation so tired and bored Sep 24 2013

I don't know what possessed me to look at this forum as I never do, but here's my two-cents' worth for you:

1) If you haven't had a full physical in the last year, please make an appointment. There could be something going on physically you are not aware of that's making you so tired. Rule out clinical depression.

2) Release yourself from the demands of exercise for the time being. Make sure you are eating unprocessed foods in appropriate portions and get enough sleep. I don't know you but is it possible you're exhausted from the demands/goals you've placed on yourself? I am very goal-oriented but I do sports that are fun for me and when I set goals I give myself tons of time to accomplish them. When I hike up a mountain it is so much more fun than a machine at the gym! It is never mind-numbing. Do something fun for a change.

As I said, I don't know your story or even what made me look at this forum today. This is going to sound weird but I want to tell you that today is the birthday of the person I admire most (he passed away in 2004). One of his favorite sayings was "soldier on", meaning just get on with whatever it is you have to do. (but go get that checkup at the doctor first!)

All the best to you - I hope you find your motivation again :)

Weight Loss constantly on the scale ? Sep 13 2013
14:22 (UTC)
Original Post by kristi_shertza:

I've been doing workouts and eating healthy but I cannot help but hop on the scale every morning !! I can't wait a week to check my progress. I know that is bad and people say I should do it once a week but I want to know if I'm doing the right thing or if I need to fix my diet ! Does anyone else do this ?

When I started CC in 2010 I used my scale to learn about how my body reacted to different foods, circumstances, TOTM, etc. I did indeed learn quite a bit about scale weight and most importantly, not to freak out if one morning I was 2 lbs heavier than the night before (oh yeahhh...all that salty popcorn last night lol). It became clear to me that the number on the scale can fluctuate even in one day and that 2 lbs on a scale does not represent 2 lbs of fat tissue! After about a year I switched to once per week.

Do what you want and make sure you're doing it for a good reason.

Is there any reason why you can't work out before work?

Planning ahead of have food cooked and in the fridge is the best way to avoid last minute decisions for take out. Devote a few hours on a Sunday morning to prepare food for the week.

^ This is what I do most of the time.

Or, if I want a fresh meal waiting for me when I come home I put some frozen meat (chicken legs, a small roast, for example) into my slow cooker, add some water, peeled carrots and onion and turn it on low for the day.

Also, body weight exercises can be done anywhere, anytime, if you can't get to the gym.

Weight Loss menopause anyone??? Sep 06 2013
14:32 (UTC)

I'm 51 next week and experiencing menopausal symptoms. I find that lifting weights has kept me from losing muscle mass while maintaining a healthy weight. If you can find someone to show you proper form at the gym, try lifting instead of cardio. You really want to hang on to muscle as you age. Sounds like you're on the right track.

Weight Loss Do you get enough Potassium?? Jul 24 2013

Do NOT supplement potassium (in pill form; having a banana or other food high in potassium is fine) unless told to by a doctor who has done blood work to determine that you are deficient.

1) Lots of foods in CC's database don't list potassium, so you aren't getting a complete count.

2) CC has a high potassium target.

Why not take supplements that are things you need? Potassium is a mineral and electrolyte that plays a significant role in metabolism, water, and chemical balance in the body. Is there something bad about taking the potassium pills to get your recommended amount? I used to take them and it helped with water weight but I never heard of them being bad.

amethystgirl said don't take a potassium supplement unless told by a doctor who has done blood work.

Potassium works closely with sodium. Too much of one will affect the heart. It happened to me because I was trying too hard to reach the CC recommendation for potassium (just through food - not even supplements) and also cutting way back on my sodium at the same time. My EKG showed a problem. I corrected it and am wiser for the experience.

Now I aim for 1500 sodium and 3000 potassium.

Edited to correct spelling mistake.

Weight Loss Weight Loss for Wedding Dress May 28 2013

Original Post by awierman: *snip* I need your advice: what would you do/have you done to lose weight fast, healthy, and been able to keep going with your weight loss journey?

I just don't see these two words going together when I think about a weight loss plan. The journey is just that...a journey. Hopefully, a lifetime journey.

My advice is for you to commit to eating healthy today and come to grips that you may not fit into the size of dress you want on the set date without compromising your health. Please don't do that.

But, you will eventually fit into that size and if you keep exercising and eating healthy, you will never have to plan weight loss for a future event again.

Foods 125 calories or less! May 16 2013
18:17 (UTC)

Whole grain toast with almond butter.

A bowl of steamed veggies with a little flax oil and salt and pepper.

Related: I Googled 125 calorie snacks and came across this Good Housekeeping link. I am NOT suggesting anyone try these "nutritious" low-cal snacks but wanted to post this to show newbies just starting out on their weight loss journeys, that this is NOT the kind of food you want to be eating if you're changing your lifestyle. That they dare to call it "best" snacks is crazy!

I was so disappointed! Almost every one of the 50 suggestions listed is packaged crap (in my humble opinion). Occasionally, the "nutrition expert" pairs the processed stuff with an apple or some berries. Sad, sad, sad. ion/50-best-low-calorie-snacks#slide-20

Weight Loss want to diet hardcore, what foods are okay to eat. Apr 11 2013

I don't think you can get rid of stretch marks, unfortunately. They will most likely fade with time, though. Have you entered your stats into the Tools calculators to get the number of calories you should be eating? Keep in mind those numbers are for adults, I believe. The best thing you can do is track what you eat, whether on this site or in a journal. Choose healthy, whole foods (avoid packaged food). Hopefully, you have help with this at home. Exercise every day, just don't get obsessive about it. Eat one helping at a meal, then get up and do something else. It won't be long before you see changes.
Weight Loss Weight loss after anorexia Apr 03 2013

Hi there,

I'm wondering if your doctor would be the best person to ask, since he/she would know your history with anorexia and would have the most informed advice for you.

Weight Loss I'm trippin'.. Apr 03 2013
14:26 (UTC)

I generally don't create posts in this forum, as I like to think I have everything in order and under control.. but.. man. I know when I need some support, and right now is the time.

Wow, did this hit me right between the eyes this morning. I've been feeling the same way for a couple of months and didn't want to admit I needed help. My honeymoon has been over since I returned from a big trip in Feb. No motivation to weight lift anymore and I barely get my cardio in at the gym. The only activity I still look forward to is a good climb up a mountain on the weekend.

I just started low-carb yesterday to try to rid myself of my sugar cravings, not to lose weight. But if I can just get the sugar out of my system it'll be a good start.

Thanks for giving me a reality check, snooglies. Best of luck to you - keep up with the quitting smoking, and try to change up some things in your daily diet. Congrats on your success thus far.

Health & Support Heart Health Based on Sleeping Position: Myth? Mar 22 2013
16:36 (UTC)

I heard it mentioned a few months ago and now it's stuck in my brain like a bad song when I go to sleep. I just *have* to make sure I'm on my right side. Sigh.

I have no idea if it's true. I'll ask my doctor next time I see her.

Weight Loss Could I really be burning 3800 cals/day? Mar 21 2013
16:46 (UTC)

About 1000 calories too high according to my numbers.

But, the cool thing is that if you use your number to gauge the amount of calories you should eat in a day to lose weight, and you don't lose weight, you'll know your monitor is incorrect.

The best way to judge how much to eat in a day to lose weight is trial and error.

Weight Loss Frustrated by cold hands/feet post weight loss Mar 18 2013
16:48 (UTC)

I have a condition called Raynaud's which causes the capillaries in my fingers and feet to contract occasionally, making them white and numb. The remedy is to run my hands under warm water until the blood flows back.

This gets worse if I am at a lower-than-normal (but still healthy) weight.

Check with doctor to find out if you have Raynaud's.

Yes, but it's unhealthy.

Why do so many people sit around inactive and eat whatever they crave - until an event looms in the near future and they panic?

Weight Loss Emotional Eating Mar 01 2013

"abusive, controlling ex... and his equally abusive and controlling wife"

Many moons ago I was in this unfortunate can relate.

"What coping mechanisms do you use to curb emotional eating?"

I decided that success is the best form of revenge. Before eating the frozen yogurt or anything else that's going to sabotage your efforts, picture yourself at your goal weight, confident and in control of yourself, walking past these two nutjobs as they stare with their mouths hanging open. I'm telling you, when it finally happens, its the best feeling ever.

Weight Loss 5'8 ladies Mar 01 2013
19:14 (UTC)

I'm 5' 8.5" and I've been as low as 139 (not a nice look - too skinny for me).

Congratulations on losing the weight! I started out at the same number - 230 - 10 years ago. I look and feel great anywhere from 145 to 160.

I don't eat processed foods if I can help it. I certainly don't buy them. I drink a lot of water and eat lots of fiber to stay hydrated and full between meals.

I'm active both in the gym and on weekends outdoors. I think having an active lifestyle and eating in moderation will take off your last 20 lbs. Good luck!
