Weight Loss My CC calorie burn meter is less than what is recommended... Jul 14 2011

When you are sick, don't worry about counting calories - your body needs energy to get better - weight loss takes a back seat to that.

Sorry to hijack someone else's thread but I am so hungry :-( I just want to freaking lose these 2 pounds I put on over vacay.  I have had a cold since Sunday which  means no working out and being doped up on cold medicine just lying around. So I am very sedentary although I went to work today. The calculator says I should eat 1204 and I have already eaten just under a 1000. I could easily eat over 1700 though which is my sedentary burn. I just don't want to be in an even worse position than I am already in. I really thought I would be able to work out today but I am so exhausted.

Health & Support My appetite is never! Jul 14 2011

I understand exactly where you are coming from. I was on vacation last week and didn't count calories at all and I was surprised at how much I could eat. I was literally eating things such as 1/3 of a cake, half a baguette, an entire small pizza with an entire Caesar salad, a plate of fries the size of my face....yet I never felt sickly stuffed. I only stopped eating because there wasn't anything else left on my plate. I think I only had leftovers twice when we went out to eat and we dined out alot. Then again I only had those leftovers in order to appear "modest" at the table. I easily ate 4,000 a day. I know some people overeat and feel sick inside but I never did. I always had room for another bite.

I would go to the doctor to make sure that there isn't anything wrong with your blood sugar or thyroid to be safe. I went and there wasn't anything wrong with me except I am just greedy. I do yoga daily which helps somewhat but not entirely. I have just have learned to be "deprived".

I am confused by the burn meters on here to. Like, if lay in bed all day (for example when I am sick) do I burn less than my sedentary? Or is that sedentary?

Greek yogurt is a good source of protein too.

My weight varies up to 5lbs during a given 24 hr period.  So gaining a pound does not sound like cause for concern.

Would you like what you see in the mirror if you were 132lbs?  If not, weight is probably not the issue here.

No, I probably wouldn't like who I saw in the mirror even if I was 132. I will always find something wrong with me.

Calorie counting is great to lose weight and assess your health but I think it has spiraled into an obsession. I am a perfectionist by nature. I am so tired of logging calories that I will skip eating just so I don't have to do it. I eat the same things over and over again just so I don't have to spend time looking for a new food. I think I am literally burning out.

Health & Support Always in a bad mood Jun 28 2011

Trust me, you are in a bad mood because you are hungry. You may not "feel" hungry but you are. Sometimes I forget to eat when I get busy/distracted but my mood sure knows it. You may have gone hungry for so long that you no longer feel the physical pain of hunger. You are 13 and need way more than 1300 calories to survive. You are hurting your body so much and your brain at that. Your brain continues to grow until you are 25 so you need adequate amounts of food to feed it.

Weight Loss Carb-aholic? Jun 24 2011

I am a vegetarian and I know that it can be tough to get protein. I would incorporate raw nuts and geek yogurt into your diet. I rarely ever go over 65% in carbs but then again I don't eat rice, grains, or potatoes. I pretty much get all my carbs from fruits, veggies, and air popped popcorn.

you know corn is a grain right?

Yeah, that's why I separated the air popped popcorn out from the fruits and veggies. I guess I should have put that I mostly don't eat rice, grains, or potatoes. I am not religious about it so I eat tortilla strips/croutons on a salad or sometimes buy gluten free donuts. Its just a little rule I have that forces me to eat more veggies and fruits. So instead of a veggie burger and fries, I will eat the burger on a salad or with steamed veggies. Or instead of pizza on a crust, I will use a portabello mushroom cap instead. Instead of pasta noodles, I use zucchini noodles.

I do keep my carbs more under control but it is definitely not low carb at all. I average 55-60%. However, the majority of my diet is from fruits/vegetables unlike before which was from bread and pasta.

I would put your hair in a high ponytail with a braid. Then wrap the braid around to form a bun and secure it. Finally, I would wear a cotton headband or sweat band.

Young Calorie Counters Im really confused as to WHY I need to eat so many calories... Jun 24 2011
14:14 (UTC)

Trust me when I say you are still growing! I grew an inch over college although I was "adult" looking at 5'7 when I graduated high school. And that is only what I could see physically. I know for a fact your brain continues to grow until you are like 25. Do you really want to compromise brain growth?

Motivation So frustrated! Jun 23 2011

Is there a counselor that you can talk to? Severe restricting/binging is usually the result of underlying emotional problems. I don't believe that 155 is even overweight for 5'9. I can understand your desire to lose vanity pounds but maybe 130 is too low for you. If you feel the urge to binge then maybe your body is resisting being at such a low weight.

I would just strive to make healthy choices but not beat yourself up over it. Don't restrict your calories and eat at maintenance. Get in tune with your body and learn to read hunger ques. In the end it should all balance out. If you feel deprived then you will be more likely to binge.

Weight Loss Peanuts Jun 22 2011

I used to eat giant bowls of cereal ALOT. I never realized that 3/4 a cup was a serving for most of them. I was easily eating 4 cups in one sitting. And these were cereals like Frosted Flakes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruit Loops, and Apple Jacks. Plus, the cereal never filled me up so I would have bowls throughout the day. I pretty much lived off cereal.

I don't eat cereal now at all because it was too hard for me to just eat 1 serving after what I had been conditioned to over the years.

Vegetarian 1200 - 1300 cals a day Vegetarian ideas...? Jun 21 2011

Have you tried making zucchini noodles as a substitute for pasta? I use a vegetable peeler to make strips about the size of fettuccine. It saves you so many calories and you just add any sauce like you would regular pasta. It's also very filling since zucchini is a starchy vegetable. I now never eat pasta and either substitute in zucchini noodles or tofu noodles.

You can also stuff portobella mushroom caps and make like a personal pizza. Just remove the steam and scrape out the gills. Bake the caps at 350F for 10 minutes or so. Then add your toppings and bake for another 10-15 minutes. Tastes just like regular pizza. One cap is only 30 calories. I usually make two and use about 100 calories worth of cheese and 30 calories of pizza sauce. That ends up being only 190 calories.

I would also eat fresh fruit instead of dried because its much more filling. I think the most filling fruits are melons, bananas, and apples.

I eat between 1200 and 1300 calories a day and this is my typical day:

  • Apple, banana, or melon
  • 150 calories of raw nuts

  • Salad with veggie patty

  • 100 calorie pack of raw almonds
  • Greek yogurt
  • A piece of fruit
  • Some cheese

  • big salad, steamed veggies with dressing, or "Pasta" (except with zuchinni noodles or tofu noodles)
Weight Loss waking up early to eat Jun 20 2011
14:22 (UTC)

Well, it's my motto to never go to sleep hungry or try to sleep through hunger. Good quality sleep is mandatory for the body in order to stay in tip top health. You won't get that if you are tossing and turning through hunger pangs. There are numerous studies on the impact that sleep or lack of has on weight.

You definitely shouldn't eat too little while you are young because you are still growing. I actually grew an inch during college which proves that the body still continues to grow even if you "look" like an adult.

I would try to have a snack before bed so that you don't interrupt your sleep in the early morning. Also, use the under 21 calorie calculators to find out what you need to be eating.

Weight Loss Anybody diet successfully with popcorn Jun 17 2011
20:16 (UTC)

Well I have lost weight and eat air popped popcorn a lot. Popcorn does contain fiber so I don't agree with it being completely empty calories. It is the perfect thing to munch on when you just crave a "snack" but not necessarily food. Plus, I got this new buffalo flavored popcorn seasoning from Target which is sooooooo good. It tastes just like a hot wing and is so spicy. It definitely gives your taste buds a "kick" which is all you want sometimes.

Health & Support Going to sleep hungry Jun 16 2011
19:40 (UTC)

I have woken up with what feels like my stomach pinned against my spine! It is the most horrible thing in the world. I have found that a banana helps and then I can go back to sleep. The bad part is that I have already eaten part of my breakfast but at least I can sleep peacefully for a little longer without tossing and turning in pain. I absolutely cannot go to sleep hungry though because I will keep waking up with tummy aches. Like, gnawing tummy aches. Definitely eat something because I heard not having a good night's sleep counteracts weight loss.

Motivation i'm so sick of it Jun 14 2011

If you don't like running then just stop doing it. Life is too short to do something just to "prove" yourself to other people. To me, it just sounds like you want others to validate your "running" when real validation comes from within. I hope that doesn't sound mean but if you truly loved to run then you wouldn't concern yourself with what others say about your regime.

Plus, running 40 miles a week is not just a "leisurely" past time to me. It is hard and taxing on the body. Why put your body under so much stress when you don't even like it? Also, why devote so much precious time to an activity you loathe so  much? I know sometimes you have to do things you don't like in order to reap a greater return but what is that return for you? Is it worth it?

With running or anything else in life you have to ask yourself if it is worth it? For instance, I dread some of the exercises I do in my circuit training but the results I am seeing are worth it. Plus, those exercises only take up a small portion of my life.

Weight Loss Can bananas make you fat? Jun 10 2011

Original Post by jcan181063877:

I have one question for everyone having this discussion have you ever seen anyone that was a raw vegan or vegan or anyone on a diet consuming a very high considerable amount of fruits and vegatives get FAT?, NO! you eat all the fruits and vegatables you want!,  There is a different between processed food calories and healthy food calories, You might as well count as healthy food calories as to not eating at all because your body is using the healthy food to do miracles for you body and whoever the sad person was you can get fat eating ANYTHING, WRONG!!!

When I first started dieting I never ate any fruit because I believed a calorie was a calorie. Why eat a banana when I could have a 100 calorie granola bar or something? However, I do believe that the body processes calories differently. Fruits provide nutrients and reduce cravings. I feel so much better when I snack on fruits and veggies. I have eaten fruit for lunch on weekends with some nuts which I have had hold me over to dinner.

Apple juice is causing childhood obesity because fruit juices remove the fiber from the fruit thus providing no satiety. The fiber slows down the absorption of sugars into the body. Drinking "fruit juice" is completely different than eating real fruit regardless of any vitamins and minerals "added" to the end product.

It is true that you shouldn't overeat period but I don't think people should avoid fruit like its a piece of chocolate cake or a bag of potato chips. I think fruit gets a bad name sometimes.

Weight Loss Are online bodyfat% calculators accurate? Jun 10 2011

Yeah, I am 5'8 and weigh 137 and the online calculators say I have between 25-29% body fat. I am not sure how accurate that is and I can't get professionally measured. Does anyone know an accurate calculator or scale that I can use?

Fitness Stretching/Toning/Yoga Options? Jun 09 2011

I do the MTV Yoga workout which has done wonders in terms of my flexibility. Also, the plank pose really strengthens your upper body and core.

I know Sara Ivanhoe has some yoga workouts under the Crunch series that are relaxing and pretty easy for beginners. I know there is a candlelight yoga workout on Netflix but I find it pretty slow.
