Fitness Activity Level Sep 30 2009

Thank you both for your advice. I think I am going to keep it sedentary and then fill in all the physical activities I do. My calories burned at sedentary with no activities added is 1700. I am going to try and maintain a 700-800 deficit, which with my exercising would allow me to eat about 1600 - 1700 calories.

Weight Loss Calorie Consumption Question Sep 29 2009
23:18 (UTC)

Overeating or not eating enough is my problem. I am at the point now where I feel like I need to go to the gym and luckily I find it enjoyable. I am going to try mperic's idea of maintaining a 700 calorie deficit, which will give me more calories to work with and then hopefully on the weekends I can maintain 1800. 1800 calories seems like a lot to me, but on the weekends I eat close to 2500 so by balancing out my consumption I think that will help me.

fatanr, I bet you have, but maybe foxxy hasn't - check out - lots of great info, and tons of stories like yours.  One article I like is Strength without size. Favorite quote:

Staying weak because of how it might make you look is the same as staying illiterate for fear of appearing nerdy. Stop it. You’re better than that.

Great article. Very informative! Thank you!

Fitness Low Weight, High Reps Sep 24 2009

I completely understand. I have been complaining that I am not lossing much weight, and my boyfriend told me that I should not be lifting anymore. If I am going to lift, I should low weight, high reps. Well, I like lifting and I love that my muscle is much more defined and I feel stronger. I don't think I could give up lifting even if I tried. Then, someone else at my gym told me the same thing. So, I am confused. Should I lift or stick to just cardio? I understand that lifting builds muscle, thus increases resting calories burned, so why would anyone tell me or us to not lift? I don't get it! Undecided

heres a great article explaining weight flunctuations.

That was an excellent article. Thank you very much! It is helpful for me to understand that there are many factors that come into play with the number on the scale.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I am not going to lose the weight lifting now that I have received some 2nd opinions. I enjoy lifting, it makes me feel stronger and I like that the muscle is becoming more defined.

Weight Loss What happend? Sep 21 2009

You are right! I do go "mad" when I weight myself daily. It is kind of like an addiction. Sometimes I wish my boyfriend would just hide the scale from me. I did pretty good in Vegas though. I didn't really gain anything, and I ate freely. I am sure all that walking did me good.

I have another question. I was told to stop lifting weights in order to loose weight. Is this correct? My typical workout is like this: 30 mins of treadmill or elliptical, then 30 mins of moderate to vigourous weights (either upper, lower, or abs), and last 30 mins of stairmaster. I am thinking of trying to cut out weights for a month and do 1 to 1 1/2 hours of only cardio. Does anyone of any advice?

Yeah, I feel that my job makes dieting difficult because I sit on my butt all day long staring at a computer.

Me too! I'm still getting used to it. My previous job had me running all over a store all day long. I never had to pay attention to calories then. Now that I work a desk job, my thighs have gotten even bigger than normal! I don't think I eat too unhealthy, although I do realize I have a bit of a problem with portion control, but I have to work out just to stay at a steady weight. I gained 5 lbs in 3 weeks when I didn't work out! YEESH! So if I want to lose any weight, I have to work out hardcore nearly every day. I'll let you know if/when I start to see any results.. Foot in mouth

I know. I feel like my metabolism has slowed down to nothing and when I do work out I have to really push myself. In the last month or two I have increased my exercise from 1 hour to 1 1/2 and still have not seen the progress that I wish I would. Please let me know what you are doing when you see results. I need all the advice I can get.

Yeah, I feel that my job makes dieting difficult because I sit on my butt all day long staring at a computer. Plus, I am not very busy right now so I find myself wanting to snack constantly. For example today, I ate a banana and had a weight loss drink and within a 1/2 hour I ate my planned snacks for the whole day, when I didn't even feel that hungry. When I used to take Hoodia, I had to force myself to eat every few hours and now all I want to do is eat. I am determined not to take any diet supplements because they force you to be dependent and I do not want that.

Does anyone else find it particularly difficult to stay motivated when most people tell you "... you don't need to lose anymore weight! You look just fine!" I know I look 'just fine', but that's not what I'm going for!

Lol :)

This drives me CRAZY. Everyone in my family is overweight. I weigh about 133 right now but still want to get down a bit more. My family definitely holds me back. I want to feel comfortable in my own skin-- not based around anyone else's standards!

AND congrats ijiwaru_shizuka on the new jeans! I just slipped into some pants the other day that have never fit me before as well :) Being only 10 lbs away is tough! Now that I'm fitting into the things I want to I'm more tempted to get off track!

I slept in late today and only had a 100 cal muffin for lunch. So I'm going to go make a HUGE salad and work out a bit! :)

I completely agree! All members in my family are overweight and I always am told that I don't need to loose any weight and my mom says some would kill to have my body. Not only do those remarks not help, but they make me mad because I am trying to feel and look better and when I am basically being told that I am wrong to feel that way, it is frusterating. I understand that I may not be obese, but I do not think it is fair for anyone to be told that they should not worry about any sort of goal they are working towards whether it be weight loss or something else.

Weight Loss Anyone looking to lose about 10 -15 pounds! Sep 08 2009

I would like to join!! I am 22, 5'5, and currently 146. My goal weight is 130-135. I started at 150 a few weeks ago and would love to be at my goal by Thanksgiving. My boyfriend and I are going to Paris and Amsterdam, so it would feel great to look my absolute BEST!

In the many years that I have tried to loose weight, this is the first time that I am not using any sort of diet pills and so far it seems to be working great, but lately I have noticed that I am eating more then I would like to. Typically I consume around 1300-1500 calories a day and most days I maintain a 700-1000 calorie deficit, but I have been eating close to 1000 before I even leave work.

I think this group will help support me in my efforts and I am hoping that we can share our struggles and find ways to overcome them together. I try to talk to my boyfriend, but honestly he is sick of me talking about it because like most people he says, you look fine. Well, I don't feel fine being in the high end of a healthy weight range and having a 29% BMI, so I am going to keep trying to loose and now I am looking for support in other ways rather then burdining him with my non-stop chatter about what I eat and how much I work out and how I want to loose more weight.

Good luck to everyone! Let's try to keep this group going strong, so we can really help one another.

Weight Loss Going Nowhere Fast! Aug 27 2009
23:20 (UTC)

I completely understand. When I started using CC more regularly and going to the gym 3-4 times a week I was not loosing anything. It can get very discouraging because I was not eating all the bad foods that I love but I looked the same, so why would I deprive myself of eating whatever I want. Well, in the last two weeks I have started a different method that seems to be working so far since I have finally lost about 5 pounds. I am not using any sort of diet supplement, which normally I was doing, and now I am only taking vitamins, and I am eating every 2-3 hours. I have increased my fiber intake drastically and I work out for an extra half hour. I have been doing 1.5 hours 4-5 times a week with a 30 min. cardio warmup, 30 min weights (alternating from 1 day to arms, next legs, last abs), and then I do 30 mins on the stairmaster. I have to say the stairmaster is a sweat machine, but I love how I can tell that I am working hard. I have only been eating about 1300-1400 cal a day, but I am not hungry at all because I am using CC to make sure that my diet is balanced and consists of a lot of fiber. Also, I have splurged on an iced coffee or ice cream and have not seen a weight gain, yet.

BTW - I am 5'5, 22, start weight 150, currently 145.2. I am aiming to be 130-135 by Nov. 20th.

My suggestion is to continue working hard, and don't get discouraged. Try to do some evaluating and try different techniques for a few days at a time until you find what works best for you. Also, check out this website, I have found it very helpful in determining a healthy calorie deficit.

Motivation Plateau? Lets break it together! Jul 28 2009
16:13 (UTC)

Those were excellent calculators. I really liked the calorie math calculator. It says that I should consume 1370 calories per day in order to have a safe calorie deficit of 700. The women's nutrition calculator was very helpful because it said what I should be consuming of each nutritional category. This was very helpful, thank you!

From using the food log, I know that I need to cut out things like ice cream on a daily basis, even if I eat well. I would say that I do eat a lot of sugar, but I thought all the exercise I do would counter it. Obviously not, since I have barely lost a pound even with the increased exercise I have been doing for the last couple months.

Yesterday, I restarted my plan at 150.1 and I am down to 148.6, but I know that it just regular fluctuation for me, a consistent decrease would be GREAT! I am hoping that my upcoming trip to Europe in November will help me focus!

Motivation Plateau? Lets break it together! Jul 27 2009

I really need some help getting past my plateau! I am 22, 5'5, and between 150-148. I have been working out regularly for the last 2 months doing 45-60 mins of cardio 3-4 days a week, with a weight sessions lasting 30-45 mins each time I work out. I eat around 1200-1700 calories a day and I have not lost a pound. Ideally I would like to be 135-140. I am at the point where I don't know what else to do and I really do not want to pay for a fitness trainer. If anyone can relate or has any advice, I really would appreicat it!

Weight Loss Please Help - Losing Hope Apr 09 2009

Thank you all! I am going to trying working out 5 times a week and also find a way to curb my snacking. Being more picky about my food is going to be difficult, but I have already started making changes such as eating much more chicken then beef, when it used to be the other way around. I like fruit, so that is not a problem, it's the vegetables that I need to get more of.

Has anyone ever tried a cleanse? There is a cleanse that I am considering from the Advocare website. I used to take their products, but like every other time, they either did not work or I can't stay consistent.

I think that I am having a hard time sticking to the calorie goal because I eat the food, then I see what the calories are. Also, I like to snack. It has been hard finding filling snack foods that stasify my "hunger" or bordness. My job is fairly slow, so there is a lot of times where I feel like I have nothing to do, which then triggers me to eat something. I bring garnola bars, fruit snacks, sometimes fruit, sun chips. I drink a lot of water which helped me for the first few days loose a couple pounds, but it all came right back.

I am going to Mexico on May 16th and really wanted to loose two pounds a week until then, but I do not want to stop eating completely. If I work out five days a week, do you think that will help. I am having a hard time deciding if that is too much for me.

I mistyped in my first post. Sorry! I work out 4 times a week and do at least 40 mins of cardio and then 20-30 mins of strength trainging, alternating every 3 days. For example, yesterday legs, today arms, and tomorrow core and so forth. I am 21 and 5'5. I work as an office manager, so I am sitting all day long. My BMI is 25 which is slighlty overweight and my weight is 148-150. I eat pretty well and take vitamins everyday. Calorie consumption ranges from about 1600 - 2000. It seems that my weakness is on the weekends and also whenever my boyfriend cooks. I really need some advice as to what I am doing wrong or what I should to instead. Before using Calorie Count again, I was signed up with weight watchers online. I do not have any problem tracking my food, I just can't seem to keep it as low as I would like.  Advice?
