Health & Support Do I have ED? Sep 28 2011
08:04 (UTC)

To add to the answer above, you also have 3 kids, so just to keep up with them and not be too tired and crabby, you have to eat well and take care of yourself.

If its baby weight that you're looking to lose, it'll come off gradually anyway.

Motivation Anyone seen my appetite? :( Sep 24 2011

Yogurtmuse, actually you got it right, i was suffering a bout of severe (maybe post partum) depression a year ago and thats when my appetite got hit. I'm ok now, but looks like my stomach shrank :(

Did your appetite naturally grow after you came out of depression? and how did you motivate yourself to eat? I've actually stopped using CC now since it stresses me out.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for your suggestions wordsmithmkuk, the cashew curry sounds great, I need to try it!  I have been eating more nuts now, since they're quite energy rich without being too filling.

Pooris..hmm i'm so used to eating healthy that eating fried/ non-whole grain/ too much sugar/ fat intake still makes me very guilty, but I'm trying!

Pregnancy & Parenting Anyone trying to lose the baby weight? Jun 30 2011
07:03 (UTC)

I had my son 2 yrs ago, I gained ~35 lbs and lost all of it and more by the time he turned 1. I would say at this point dont worry about your weight, focus on your baby and eat healthy. I just ate healthy, bf'd till my boy was ~16 months and tried to work out whenever I could without beating myself too much.

I did go back to wrk when he was 3 months so in between work, home and baby I was always rushing around and later chasing him around the house, I'm sure that helped!  Good luck with the weight loss but enjoy your baby...thats more important!

Vegetarian 1200 - 1300 cals a day Vegetarian ideas...? May 19 2011
08:14 (UTC)

Well seems to me  you're already eating a healthy diet with soy, tofu, beans, lentils, whole grains, etc. So the only thing would be to cut down the amount you eat?

I keep myself full with lots of low cal salads and soups (I'm vegetarian too), fruit, and high protein bread. I've cut out sugar (for the most part), white bread, white rice, white pasta, soda.

If you feel like you're always hungry and going over the 1200 cals, maybe your body needs more..think about that!

EDIT: I re-read and realized you have a young kids..there is no way you can survive on a 1200 calorie diet and have enough energy to run around with them. I know- I am a mother of an energetic 2 yr old!

Weight Loss Help! what can I eat on vacation, in our hotel room??? Mar 10 2011
04:22 (UTC)

eggs! i would cook eggs in the microwave when we were staying in a hotel with a kitchenette. Just make sure to pierce the yolk and cover the bowl so that it doesn't explode!

Canned garbanzo beans, tofu, hummus, cottage cheese are other good options while travelling.

Pregnancy & Parenting Baby and all the other weight that goes with it... Aug 24 2010
06:48 (UTC)

Congratulations! I had a baby boy a year ago, I gained 25lbs in my pregnancy. When the lil one came out..all of 6lbs, I was so ready to step onto the scale and have all the weight gone..but naa..I just lost about 10lbs post delivery and then gradually lost all the weight plus some more in about 8-9 months.

I was 120lbs pre-prego and am like 118lbs now, I'm still BFing, eating right, excersing around 2-3 times a week. I never starved myself and had a HUGE appetite the first 2-3 months which gradually went down.

Be patient, enjoy your baby. It takes a while to get back to tummy's still  not that firm and flat anymore but aah the joys of motherhood! :)

edit: gained 25lbs not 35lbs

Pregnancy & Parenting Incorrect burn meter for lactation diet setting? Aug 03 2010
17:08 (UTC)

thanks bierorama, this calculator shows my burnt calories as 2200.

I had selected the "lactation diet" setting on CC--looks like it doesn't work. As for activity level setting- since I have a desk job I just input "sedentary"and it gives me 1490 calories burnt..

Oh well atleast I know its not correct!

Original Post by mcshan:

Sorry, quick post hijack.  I am trying to get some of the weight lifting lingo - I am a n00b - what is/are Doms?

From wikipedia:

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), also called muscle fever, is the pain and stiffness felt in muscles about 24 to 72 hours after unaccustomed and/or strenuous exercise. It is a symptom of muscle damage caused by eccentric exercise. After such exercise, the muscle adapts rapidly to prevent muscle damage, and thereby DOMS, in repeated bouts.

Recipes good authentic dahl recipes anyone? Jun 16 2010
06:10 (UTC)

I"d suggest cooking the dal in a pressure cooker- 20 mins, 3 whistles and all done. No soaking reqd.

This is how I make my authentic Indian dal-

1 cup yellow split peas

3 cups water

1 slit green chili

1" ginger- crushed

Salt to taste + pinch of turmeric pdr

Put all this in the pressure cooker. Let 3-4 whisltes blow. Meanwhile take 1-2 tsp oil/ ghee in a pan, when hot, add 1/2 tsp asafoetida (no worries if you dont have it), some cumin seeds, curry leaves chopped tomatoes or onion (optional) and pour this over the cooked dal. Top with lemon juice, chopped cilantro and you're all done!

Weight Loss How do you stick to eating healthy? Jun 16 2010
05:37 (UTC)

Congratulations on the baby! I so understand your situation- I had a baby last year, and in between the exhaustion, constant feeds, heaps of laundry I never had the time and inclination to cook and eat  healthy.

I am a vegetarian too, and finally one fine day I said enough is enough. I decided to keep only healthy foods in the house, no junk, no chips (so easy to munch on them when the baby's feeding). Whenver I had time I cooked some healthy stuff- tofu curry, lentils etc and froze it. I bought lots of pre-cooked meals from Trader Joe's/ Whole Foods and always had milk, eggs and Kashi Go Lean cereal on hand for a quick fix dinner. I still never made it to the gym until the baby was sleeping a but longer at arnd 3months.

So hang in there, good luck and remeber what you eat goes to the baby- thats the mantra I adopted to eat healthy!

Fitness Advice needed- when can I give up cardio? May 14 2010
10:28 (UTC)

thanks for the advice!  just to clarify, I don't hate cardio at all. in fact i like running but what I meant was with my time limitation and goal being to define/build muscle do i need to do it all.

@vyperman: circuit training sounds great, I have been kind of following this since i have max 30-45 mins at the gym and I try to maximize it. I usually use the max amount of weights that I can take- I try to do 8-10 reps of an excercise until muscle failure, but I think picking up the pace will definitely help.

so the next question i have is should I reduce the weight or still continue to muscle failure?

Weight Loss Cold hands and weight loss? May 10 2010
12:01 (UTC)

I have the same issue- for me its a medical condition called reynauds phenomenon where due to poor circulation, my extremeties- hands, toes, nose are always cold my fingers would actually turn bluish in winter, skin would peel and even bleed- ugh. There's no cure for it, only excercise, no-smoking and keeping yoursellf warm helps, so i would constanty be cradling warm cups of coffee at work!

do get yourself checked for this is yours is a similar case! btw- i'm vegetarian and maintaining by eating around 1500-1600 cals a day.

Health & Support oatmeal and fullness? Mar 06 2010
08:34 (UTC)

The portion size could also depend on the amount of water used and the method of cooking. I've seen that when I make my oats in the microwave it's a smaller portions as opposed to when I soak them for a while with extra water and then cook them on the stove top. The oats swell up and it looks like a huge portion.

Maybe all the extra water is making you fuller?

Generally 1/4 cup oats for me make 1/2 cup cooked oats in the micro and maybe 3/4cup over the stove.
